Letter of the President

Dear EURAM colleagues and friends,

We are quickly approaching the 23rd Annual Conference ‘Transforming Business for Good’ – that will be held 14-16 June at the Trinity College in Dublin. The conference received 1976 submissions, involved 2200 reviewers, and will have over 500 sessions, 1306 papers presented, 41 symposia, and 6 labs. We estimate that more than 1,800 delegates will attend the conference ad well as 78 PhDs for the Doctoral Colloquium. I take the opportunity to warmly thank all EURAM stakeholders that made this possible: the SIG chairs, the Track chairs, the symposia & Lab panelists, the submitters, the reviewers, the local organizers (the Trinity College team!), the Chairs of the Doctoral Colloquium, the ExCom, the Board and the EURAM staff.

In 2023 European Management Review (EMR) celebrates its 20th anniversary. I invite you to go to the journal website to see how beautiful is the new cover. The two EMR co-editors (Anna and Michael) are leading the journal with passion and care, and the results are visible. However, all members may contribute to its development by performing various tasks: submitting their works, acting as reviewers and building their research on its content. I warmly invite all EURAM members to continuously support our Society’s journal.

In March 2023, I attended the EURAM Early Career Colloquium hosted by Gdansk University. It was a great experience from several viewpoints: the generous and expert advices provided by mentors, the passionate aspirations and dreams of the early career scholars, the efficient and empathic coordination of the local organisers, the leadership of Pierre and the long-term involvement of past EURAM Presidents. I experienced one of the best expressions the EURAM spirit, i.e., how the interactions and dynamics between senior and young colleagues may contribute to develop a stronger and more cohesive community of management scholars!

Finally, I remind you that EURAM has launched the call for topics and symposia for the 2024 annual conference that will be organised by Bath University (24-28 June 2024). While we are quickly approaching our next annual meeting in Dublin, do not forget to start designing and planning the 2024 annual conference. The submission deadline is 7 July 2023.

It will be nice meeting you all in Dublin!

All the best,

Alessandro Zattoni

EURAM President

Update from Panos Desyllas, Vice President Research Funding

Dear colleagues,

We would like to share with our members some recent changes that have been introduced by the Scientific Council of the European Research Council (ERC). Cowork4EU: Coworking Best Practices for European Universities

This Erasmus+ project by TU Dortmund University Germany, Paris School of Business France, Seeburg Castle University Austria, and Prague University of Economics and Business Czechia aims to advance coworking at universities.

It comprises a joint coworking course, bringing together students and academics from all four universities. The first Cowork4EU course premiered in Prague in April 2023. Students developed the ideal university coworking space and delivered high-quality concepts ranging from coworking spaces focussed on wellbeing and inclusion over a franchise and network approach to fully-equipped tech spaces for startups.

Additionally, Cowork4EU aims to establish a network to connect European university coworking spaces. A final best practice report will inform how to successfully leverage coworking at universities. Caught your interest? Find more information here: www.cowork4.eu

EURAM 2023 Symposium & Podcast on Building Values-Based Innovation Cultures for Sustainable Business IMPACT

Most companies have adopted some sustainability strategy, but hardly any succeed to turn it into consistent practices. Together with leading European firms, the IMPACT project (www.impact-project.site) explores good practices and persisting challenges for creating values-based and sustainability-oriented innovation cultures. What happens if organisational culture eats sustainability strategy for breakfast?

In an EURAM 2023 symposium we will share insights from a large ethnographic study in four European countries on good practices and challenges for creating a values-based and sustainability-oriented innovation culture. Together with the participants we will co-create new approaches how to build on good practices and to address the challenges.

Listen to this new podcast (https://www.buzzsprout.com/721626/12635922-impact-building-values-based-innovation-cultures-for-sustainable-business-impact-an-interview-with-prof-dr-henning-breuer) to find out more about IMPACT and values-based innovation cultures for sustainable business impact.

IFSAM WEBINAR on “The governance of higher education markets in turbulent times: the challenges of corporatization and distance learning

20th June 2023, 2 pm CEST

The pandemic has accelerated the trend towards corporatization and distance learning in higher education institutions (HEIs). Education in business and management, which accounts for 15/20% of Higher Education student numbers across the globe, has been exposed to both trends; in particular, business schools have been exposed to corporatization. Hence, HEIs that are traditionally governed by a bottom-up approach have been pushed to a top-down organizational model based mostly on financial indicators. At the same time, the pandemic made distance learning reach record shares of the market in different parts of the world. As far as regulation is concerned, governments in different parts of the world have taken decisions either for or against public education and funding, and have either tightened or loosened educational criteria. Hence the turbulence we identify has different configurations across the globe. We want, in this panel, to examine the different ‘turbulences’ taking place in different countries and regions, not just to compare them, but to imagine ways forward that may protect education quality.

Mental Health in the Workplace

I am providing information about the creation of a non-profit organization which brings together practitioners, scholars and public and private organizations, to promote mental health in the workplace.

This is an illustration on how scholars can extend their social impact for the common good! You may join this movement by emailing us and/or creating a similar organization in your own country.
