EURAM Newsletter – November 2025

Letter of the President

Dear EURAM members, dear friends and colleagues,

I have great memories of the EURAM 2025 annual conference and doctoral colloquium organised by the University of Florence. Our society has grown a lot in the past three years and may continue to grow in the near future. Our last annual conference reached a new record number, with over 2000 participants. While growth is important as it demonstrates the high scholarly interest in both joining our society and attending our events, I consider it more relevant to continue to develop an inclusive and engaged society of management scholars. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from the survey on the conference experience indicates that the local organisers did an amazing job, and I can assure you that we will work to address the few issues raised by some members to fine-tune the organisation of the next annual conference. I warmly thank once again the entire team of the University of Florence led by Sara De Masi and Andrea Paci, the SIG and track chairs, the VPs and the staff, the guest speakers and panellists, the sessions chairs and discussants, the reviewers and submitters, the guest speakers, and – last but not least – our partner DEKON. They did a fantastic job helping EURAM celebrate its 25th anniversary!

The next conference and doctoral colloquium (DC) will be hosted by the University of Agder, in Kristiansand. The DC will be held June 15-16, while the conference will take place June 16-19, 2026. Do not forget to submit your working papers by January 7 and your candidature to the DC by January 14, 2026. I am looking forward to meeting all of you in Agder next year! In the meantime, you may also consider joining EURAM’s Early Career Colloquium in Toulouse on March 25-27, a great opportunity to share your research work and explore new collaboration opportunities with peers.

Under the leadership of Thomas Durand, chair of the EURAM board, a group of members (including the President, some VPs, board members and other members of the society) has developed a document analysing the current academic context, assessing future trends, and outlining possible strategic directions for EURAM. During the annual conference, the EURAM board and executive committee met together to discuss which strategic paths to follow in the future. Since September, the board and the executive committee has begun developing new projects and initiatives aimed at enriching the personal and professional development of our members. As usual, we will pay special attention to the youngest or least experienced ones, as they represent the future of our society.

Finally, I would like to welcome three new VPs to our Society: Jatinder Sidhu, VP for research; Till Talaulicar, VP for Academic Development; and Zeynep Yalabik, VP for International Engagement. While Jatinder will fulfil a traditional role within EURAM, Till and Zeynep will develop new initiatives. Specifically, Till will enrich the academic program of our annual conference by creating new sessions aimed at strengthening the academic skills and experiences of attendees, while Zeynep will guide and coordinate the country representatives so that they can be more involved and active actors within EURAM. I personally thank all three for accepting these key responsibilities within EURAM.

I look forward to meeting you all soon!

All the best

Alessandro Zattoni

SIG-Specific Updates

We invite you to submit your best work to the Special Issue “Artificial Intelligence, Business, and Epochal Change” curated by guest editors Glen Whelan, Gabriel Weber, Yann Truong, and BAS editor Simon Pek.

The Special Issue aims to develop conceptually sophisticated perspectives on the dual-position that business occupies with regards to artificial intelligence and epochal change. Rather than focusing on lower, more specific, levels of analysis – e.g., AI and organizational efficiency, AI and human resources, AI and privacy – the guest editors invite submissions that seek to account for the full richness of AI’s impacts by adopting a higher-order point of view. As a result, they encourage submissions that employ a philosophical interdisciplinary approach so as to further our understanding of the two positions that business occupies with regards to AI and epochal change, and which they respectively outline in more detail in the call for papers (see link below).

Special Issue timeline:

Online pre-submission workshop (participation optional): April/May 2026
Pre-submission window will be open from September 1 to September 30, 2026
Online post-submission workshop (tentative, participation optional): January/February 2027

Tamara: Journal of Critical Organization Inquiry – Call for Papers

Sources of Organizational Knowledge: Sound, Color, and Smell
Et pour cela préfère l’Impair

Guest editors:
Luigi Maria Sicca – University of Naples Federico II, Scuola Superiore Meridionale
Davide Bizjak – University of Naples Federico II
Domenico Napolitano – Scuola Superiore Meridionale
Daniela Pianezzi – University of Verona

This Call aims to establish a platform for innovative and rigorous explorations, inviting contributions that
deepen our understanding of organizational knowledge through the lens of sound, color, and smell. Central to this inquiry is the dynamic interaction between organizational researchers (who are at times also artists) and artists themselves—practitioners who master the grammar of their respective disciplines, whether as musicians, painters, or writers.

We suggest the following, but encourage contributions that extend beyond these boundaries:
• Aesthetics and Organizations
• Archetypes and Organizations
• Bodies and Organizations
• How the sound of the words shapes and performs social languages
• The Concept of Contemporaneity in Organizations
continuous evolution
• Alternative Epistemologies
• Organizations and the Humanities
• Organizations as Social Performances
• Organizations as Sonic and Visual Spaces
• Languages as Archetypes in Organizations
• Art and Management: Examining how art informs organizational learning and innovation
• Temporality, Spacing, and Organizing

When Authenticity Meets Influence: How Agencies Blend UGC and Influencer Marketing

In a world where audiences crave realness more than reach, social media agencies face a new challenge how to make brands feel authentic without losing visibility. This study explores how marketing professionals strategically mix influencer marketing and user-generated content (UGC) to create campaigns that both inspire and feel genuine. Through in depth conversations with agency experts, the research uncovers how influencers ignite attention, while UGC sustains trust over time. The findings show that authenticity isn’t just a happy accident, it’s something agencies carefully design and manage. By balancing polished influence with everyday voices, brands can build lasting emotional connections and credibility in the digital age.
Keywords: authenticity, UGC, influencer marketing, trust, social media strategy

The LISA (LISA – Learning, Inclusion, Salary, Ageing) project, led by Professor Eliana Minelli (LIUC – Cattaneo University), investigates how four dimensions of social inequality—lifelong learning, labor market inclusion, the wage gap, and workforce aging—impact business competitiveness and human capital development in the cross-border area between Italy and Switzerland. Through an action research approach and a multi-method strategy, LISA goes beyond analysis to actively engage businesses, public and private institutions, trade unions, and policymakers, with the aim of transforming local vulnerabilities into opportunities for sustainable growth and social cohesion. The results enrich the scientific debate and contribute to the mission of the EURAM community: generating knowledge useful for addressing complex challenges at the European and global levels (https://www.liuc.it/ricerca/ricerca-accademica/progetti/lisa-learning-inclusion-salary-ageing/).

Make a critique of polycentric self-governance

Submit a pitch to present a mini contribution to SIG 02 COGO  on how corporate charters might best be amended to replace centralized management dictatorships with polycentric self-governance. Or critique power point 18, of a generic example presented last year to colleagues and students of Elinor Ostrom at her home university.

Make your submission to salijani@aup.edu and/or sturnbull@alumni.harvard.edu  Distributed decision-making simplifies complexity and avoids corporations poisoning political democracies. Help turn our Symposium into a highly participatory social invention workshop to fill the intellectual void in applied self-governance education, and biomimicry practices. Design practical solutions on how stakeholder voices could control executives to achieve self-governance while maintaining shareholder primacy. IMAGinA – Informal Management and Governance in Africa
By Ilaria Galavotti (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Italy) & Susan Martha D. Bvochora (Catholic University of Zimbabwe)

The IMAGinA project, co-led by Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and the Catholic University of Zimbabwe in partnership with the E4Impact Foundation, investigates how African enterprises govern and thrive through informal yet institutionalized systems of kinship, reciprocity, and trust.
Drawing on data platforms and field research in African countries, IMAGinA seeks to decolonize management knowledge by developing context-sensitive theories of entrepreneurship and governance and comparing indigenous African models with European SME practices.
By fostering dialogue between African and European scholars, IMAGinA advances EURAM’s vision of a diverse, inclusive, and globally connected management community.

Doctoral thesis completion and contribution – Begonya Ebot

I am pleased to share that I have completed my doctoral thesis titled ‘Embeddedness in the Start-up and Growth of Black Women Entrepreneurs in the West Midlands (UK)’ at the University of Wolverhampton. The study explores the unique challenges black women face in launching and growing their businesses, along with strategies to navigate these barriers. It contributes to entrepreneurship scholarship by amplifying marginalised voices and challenging assumptions of homogeneity among ethnic minority entrepreneurs. The research offers deeper insights into the entrepreneurial journeys of black women and advocates for more inclusive, context-aware theoretical frameworks. Additionally, it extends the mixed embeddedness theory (Kloosterman et al., 1999) by introducing a fourth dimension—technological embeddedness—highlighting the role of digitalisation in business growth.

Prototyping participatory business models in heritage organisations
The Horizon Europe project RECHARGE has generated new evidence on how participation enhances entrepreneurial competences and creates social and economic value in cultural heritage organisations. The consortium of universities (including Erasmus University Rotterdam) and civil society actors developed three Participatory Business Models, translated into practical pathways for museums and libraries. These models were tested and validated by nine institutions across Europe through Living Labs, demonstrating their feasibility, transferability, and measurable benefits. They encourage a shift from passive engagement to collective resource management, platform building, and ownership arrangements that share risks and benefits between organisations and communities.
RECHARGE also released practical tools, including the Participatory Business Modelling Canvas and the RECHARGE Playbook, to support the adoption of participatory practices. These insights are relevant for researchers and practitioners across sectors.

Special issue in the International Journal of Cross Cultural Management: “Advancing Multi-Paradigm Research in Cross-Cultural Management Studies” – a plea for openness, dialogue, and diversity of perspectives in research.

Christoph Barmeyer, University of Passau (Germany), Sina Grosskopf, International University of Monaco and Jaime Bonache, Carlos III University of Madrid (Spain) have compiled six exciting articles that show how much potential there is in multi-paradigm research – from empirical case studies to fundamental reflections on paradigms
This raises questions, as: How can we bring seemingly incompatible paradigms into productive dialogue with each other? What new methodological avenues open up when we view phenomena through multiple theoretical lenses? And do we even need the term “paradigm” anymore – or should we rather speak of perspectives?

The articles of the SI impressively demonstrate how multiparadigmatic approaches point to new avenues for intercultural management practice.

Airbus: Best Case Study Prize in International Business Awarded to Ulrike Mayrhofer and Christoph Barmeyer

Ulrike Mayrhofer, IAE Nice, Université Côte d’Azur, and Christoph Barmeyer, University of Passau, received the Best Case Study Prize awarded by Atlas AFMI (Association Francophone de Management International) and the CCMP (Centrale de Cas et de Médias Pédagogiques).
The case study is entitled “Airbus, a global leader with European roots”.

This case study looks at how the Airbus Group has developed interculturally. Students are asked to prepare a strategic diagnosis, analyse the executive committee and board of directors, identify top managers’ career paths and recommend intercultural management implementation. Airbus aims to be “a pioneer in sustainable aerospace for a safe and united world”. It is the most culturally diverse aerospace company, with a workforce of 150 nationalities and 20 spoken languages. It is in this context that the group chooses to implement the constructive approach of intercultural management.

Dear colleagues,

We are delighted to announce our Special Issue and warmly invite scholars to submit your work. From acute crises to mundane extremity in everyday operations, we are seeking conceptual papers that advance theoretical understanding of how extremity manifests, evolves, and impacts organizations.

Doctoral Thesis Completion and Contribution – González Garza

I recently completed my Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) at Paris School of Business. My thesis, “Business Model Adaptation and the Specificities of Medium-Sized Companies: The Case of a Latin American Family Business”, investigates how SMEs adapt and reconfigure resources through dynamic capabilities when facing market and regulatory constraints. The research was based on 86 interviews across managerial levels and geographies, combined with operational and financial data. Findings highlight the critical role of dense managerial interactions and senior leadership particularly CFOs in driving business model reconfiguration. This autumn, Christoph Barmeyer and Elisabeth Huber (Chair of Intercultural Communication, University of Passau) visited Montréal as part of a research project on migrant integration by the Caisse Desjardins cooperative bank, which was also presented at EURAM in Florence. Their findings offer a new perspective on the societal functions of financial institutions: suggesting that banks act not only as economic intermediaries, but also as ‘acculturation companions’ that can positively impact the integration of immigrants. Together with Tobi Rodrigue from UQAM, they presented the findings of their research to date to the interview participants and representatives of strategic departments of Desjardins. The trip thus served to validate the study and prepare for the second phase of the project, which will incorporate the perspectives of migrant bank clients.

We can’t define an organization’s purpose in fifteen seconds but that’s enough to spark the conversation.
PurposeExplorer was built on this idea, as an early version free web-based tool that drafts purpose statements in 15 seconds, validates them against eight attributes, and draws on a database of 150 examples from 22 countries and 21 industries.
The tool serves as an open initiative to help researchers, entrepreneurs, and leadership teams evaluate and open discussions about purpose and culture.
They can use it as an icebreaker, or a workshop exercise to engage participants in meaningful dialogue. In any case the tool is not meant to replace the purpose definition and activation processes.
Colleagues and enthusiasts are warmly encouraged to join in taking this initiative to the next level.

The special issue “AI and Cooperation: Towards a New Era in Inter-Organizational Relationships” explores how artificial intelligence is reshaping the way organizations interact, collaborate, and innovate together. It welcomes contributions that investigate emerging collaborative dynamics enabled by AI—ranging from co-innovation and resource sharing to inter-organizational governance, trust, and fairness. The guest editors particularly encourage analytical and empirical studies that reveal how AI redefines cooperation, coordination, and strategic alignment across firms, institutions, and broader ecosystems. The ambition is to build a comprehensive understanding of the opportunities, tensions, and challenges brought by AI in inter-organizational collaborations, while proposing theoretical and managerial insights. This special issue aims to guide both scholars and practitioners in navigating this structural transformation.

LICAIM – LUMSA International Research Center for Artificial Intelligence Management

Some months ago, the University of Rome LUMSA has started a NEW International Research Center on AI whose objectives are:

To develop a critical view of AI and AI management, otherwise termed “a human-centered view of AI”.
The human-centered view of AI recognizes its pros and cons or its advantages and limitations. Among the latter, we account for the high levels of energy consumption, the cloud occupations limits, the computer heating problem and the risk of fully substituting human intervention which is carrying hazardous open-ended outcomes and solutions.

This work contributes to management scholarships by deepening understanding of dynamic capabilities in resource-constrained environments and offers practical guidance for SMEs on sustaining competitiveness.

The first Encyclopaedia of Mergers and Acquisitions will be published by Edward Elgar in spring 2026.

Edited by Duncan Angwin (UCL), David King (Florida State University, Florian Bauer (Bristol University), the “Encyclopaedia of M&A ” brings together the contributions of 60 expert authors including leading professors and practitioners from around the world. By including a wide range of contemporary, emerging and entirely new topics, we believe this work is a significant step in providing scholars and practitioners with a broad ranging strategic perspective on M&A to inspire reflection, dialogue and exploration of foundational knowledge and new insights.

A recent critical review by Hunger et al. (2025) examines how sustainability can be effectively embedded in the early stages of new product development (NPD). The analysis reveals that, despite a growing number of tools and frameworks, most approaches remain fragmented and focus mainly on environmental and economic aspects. Social, cultural, and systemic dimensions are still largely neglected. Managing sustainability trade-offs – such as balancing ecological benefits, costs, and technical feasibility – remains a major challenge. Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) is identified as a promising but underused approach for integrating diverse sustainability facets. The authors call for validated, user-friendly tools that enable a multidimensional and practical incorporation of sustainability into innovation processes – an essential step toward future-oriented, resilient product design.
