Letter of the President

Dear EURAM colleagues and friends,

We are approaching the end of an intense and vibrant calendar year. During the upcoming holidays, we will finally have time to relax and to spend some time with our beloved ones.

With the last newsletter of 2024, I would like to remind you some important deadlines and key important events concerning our Society.

The next onsite Annual Conference will be organized by the School of Economics and Management of the University of Florence (22-25 June 2025). The deadline to submit your paper to the 2025 EURAM Annual Conference is the 14th of January 2025. There are expectations that the event will be a great success, also because we will celebrate the 25th Annual Conference of our Society.

As usual, there will be also an onsite Doctoral Colloquium (21-22 June 2025), whose deadline for submission is the 21th of January 2025. This event represents a great opportunity for PhD students to meet their peers from various countries, and to develop skills and competencies to boost their professional career.

Still in 2025, EURAM will organize the 16th edition of the EECC at the Bologna Business School (19-21th of March). This program has been designed to help early career scholars to build a richer professional network, to develop more sophisticated research skills, and to better navigate the academic career.

I am also happy to share some good news about the development of our Society.

  • The co-editors of our journal (i.e., European Management Review or EMR) accepted to continue for another 3-year period. I personally thank Anna and Michael for their amazing work during the first term and I am sure they will reach higher ends during the second term.
  • Thanks to David Versailles, EURAM has created a link with a reputed practitioner journal, i.e., the Conversation Europe. I inform you that EURAM members have already published three articles in the journal, and I hope many more will be published in the coming months.
  • The 7th of October, Panos Desyllas organized a webinar on Selecting the qualitative method that fits your project, with Niels Noorderhaven, past chair of EURAM, as guest speaker. I strongly suggest all junior scholars to watch the webinar if they want to learn more on how to develop a qualitative study (view it on YouTube).
  • EURAM has started to celebrate our 25th anniversary by posting on LinkedIn pictures and stories from past presidents, conference chairs, SIGs and countries, EECC and PhD organizers and attendees. In addition, the EURAM fellows have launched a 25th Anniversary Special Issue on The Future of Management Education and Research: The role of institutions, whose deadline is the 31st of January 2025.

The number of our members is 2433 and our followers on social media are close to 17K. To access all benefits available to EURAM members, I remind you to renew your membership.

I hope to meet you next June at the 25th EURAM Annual Conference and Doctoral Colloquium in Florence.

In the meantime, I am happy to wish you a happy holiday season and a fantastic 2025!

All the best,

Alessandro Zattoni

TAMZINI Khaled (Ed.) 2024, Multidimensional Assessments of New Venture Legitimacy. IGI Global Press: The Advances in Business Strategy and Competitive Advantage (ABSCA) Book Serie.

Abstract: New entrepreneurial ventures face a “liability of newness”; their risk of failure is much higher than for established organizations (Stinchcombe, 1965). This uncertainty and lack of operating history make it difficult for them to access needed resources to exploit opportunities (Zimmerman & Zeitz, 2002). To overcome this liability, entrepreneurs strive to establish organizational legitimacy: a “generalized perception or assumption that the actions of an entity are desirable, proper, or appropriate within some socially constructed system of norms, values, beliefs, and definitions” (Suchman, 1995, p. 574). Although organizational legitimacy attainment and management are relevant for all organizations (Suchman, 1995), it is in the early phases of venture development – when a venture is still young, resource-constrained, and extremely uncertain (McMullen & Shepherd, 2006) – that legitimacy hurdles and challenges are greatest (Fisher, Kotha, & Lahiri, 2016). For entrepreneurs, establishing and maintaining new venture legitimacy is complex; research has highlighted various specific contingencies that complicate this process. There is tension between fitting in with market norms, values, beliefs, and definitions, and standing out from others in the market to gain a differentiation advantage (Gehman & Grimes, 2017; Navis & Glynn, 2010, 2011; Zhao et al., 2017). There is a need to establish legitimacy with different groups of stakeholders (Fisher et al., 2017) and to account for various market contexts in which a venture operates (Navis & Glynn, 2011; Tracey, Dalpiaz, & Phillips, 2018; Soublière & Gehman, 2019; Younger & Fisher, 2020). All this takes place processual over time; legitimacy is not established quickly (Suddaby, Bitektine, & Haack, 2017; Tracey et al., 2018).

The main objective of this edited book is to generate a collection of theoretical and empirical chapters dealing with issues related to entrepreneurial legitimacy and to provide new answers from this research perspective. Its chapters can follow a qualitative or quantitative approach. They can relate to different epistemologies as long as the implications and research issues are clarified. They must show rigor in the conceptual and theoretical framework and the methodology used.

Social Sustainability and Good Work in Organizations

Edited By Simon Jebsen, Klarissa Lueg

This edited research monograph collects nine unique research contributions on the concept of social sustainability and its connection to possibilities and hindrances for good work in organisations. Social sustainability, in organisational contexts, emphasizes the long-term well-being of stakeholders and communities. The authors in this book demonstrate how organisational long-term strategies should prioritise employee well-being, mental health, community engagement, and ethical supply chain management, inter alia. Readers, from undergraduate students to the research community, will learn how long-term social sustainability orientation is different from Corporate Social Responsibility, which responds to immediate stakeholder expectations. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals have nudged many organisations to implement social sustainability, and many authors in this book relate to UN concepts such as the SDGs or the Global Compact’s definition of social sustainability. However, many organisations have come under scrutiny for acting merely ceremonial to live up to the current megatrends. In consequence, readers will take away that the line between genuine corporate mission and ceremonial lip services must be critically observed, and how this can be done in different areas. Key chapters of this book explore social sustainability, e.g., in higher education (as sustainable knowledge in business students), in corporate communication (employee identification, corporate volunteering, and corporate heritage), and in sustainable human resource management practices. Workplace toxicity, especially towards minorities, is explored, highlighting both the role of bystanders and the financial repercussions of ignoring workplace harassment. Digital transformation’s social implications, employee well-being, and the importance of psychological safety in startups are addressed. The chapters, all together, signify the relevance of meaningful work for long-term societal cohesion and individual fullfilment.

The European Academic Coworking Network is officially launched!

The European Academic Coworking Network (EACN) has been recently launched as part of the EU-funded “Cowork4EU” project of the Technical University of Dortmund, Private University Schloss Seeburg, Prague University of Economics and Business and Paris School of Business. The EACN aims to connect university coworking spaces from all over Europe.

Using a digital platform, it enables students, researchers and other university members to book and use free workspaces with other EACN members. This not only enables the flexible use of workspaces at other universities, but also promotes the networking of students and researchers as well as local start-up and innovation ecosystems. Use of the EACN is free of charge for everyone involved. The network has already gathered member coworking spaces and student users across Europe with first bookings already being made!

Does your university have a coworking space? Then we look forward to welcoming your university as an EACN member! If you want to join us, feel free to visit the network at eacn.network!

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact Prof. Dr. Simon Hensellek (simon.hensellek@tu-dortmund.de) or Jonah Weißwange (jonah.weisswange@tu-dortmund.de).

3rd Organizing Creativity

Transalpine Paper Development Workshop

12-13 May 2025

@ Freie Universität Berlin, Department of Management

in cooperation with Leuphana University Lüneburg

The 3rd Organizing Creativity Transalpine Paper Development Workshop is aimed at academics who wish to develop their ongoing work, empirical or conceptual, related to creativity, broadly defined, i.e., embracing both “OT” (organization theory) and “OB” (organizational behavior) perspectives on creativity and innovation. The workshop will be developmental, with each paper receiving detailed and hands-on feedback from two senior scholars with a track record of multiple publications in the field of creativity research. Authors will also receive feedback from peers with similar research interests.

The workshop is of special interest to all early scholars: not only doctoral students who completed a substantial part of their dissertation but also post-docs, assistant professors, researchers, and junior lecturers.

The workshop has become an annual opportunity for early scholars in the fields of organization and management, strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship, or public management to join a vibrant international community of scholars interested in creativity and creative processes and practices in and between organizations. The workshop offers an opportunity to feel part of a community, benefit from discussion and exchange of ideas, and envision new collaborations.

We see this workshop series as an opportunity to develop a community of creativity researchers in Europe and beyond that builds on and connects communities that have been established at EGOS or EURAM and in the context of various centers of creativity research.
