I attended other online conferences before, and they were more aseptic. Networking was also much more difficult, if not impossible. The environment was also very constructive. I really liked it. This is non-trivial, since I am a PhD student, and this was the first EURAM conference I attended. I wish I had a paper ready to be submitted to the next one.

The conference was very well organised, and the parallel sessions were very close to the quality of the parallel sessions in face-to-face conferences of previous years.

Tell us what you enjoyed most at the conference:

Our track discussions which were vivid and lively. The Covid crisis is one example of such a problem, epitomizing issues that are more challenging, important, risky and radically uncertain than those classically considered in the decision making literature.

There has in fact been growing recognition of the need for elaboration on novel decision making models for highly uncertain problems, exemplified by the 2020 SI of AMR (Alvarez and Porac 2020), and various contributions on the features and challenges posed by situations of uncertainty variously qualified as ‘epistemic’, ‘Knightian’ ‘Black Swan’-like and ‘unknown’ (Faulkner et al 2017, Foss 2020, Runde 2009, Feduzi et al forth, Packardt et al 2017, Le Masson, et al. 2019). However, methods and models that are both realistically applicable and logically sound for deciding under radically uncertain conditions are not abundant.

<div class='avia-button-wrap Determinants of Young Consumer Need for Uniqueness in India” has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Indian Culture and Business Management (An Inderscience Publication). A brief write-up is mentioned below.

Consumer’s need for uniqueness (CNFU) is a popular construct among western societies. The construct has been tested under different conditions and has been found useful. In this paper, our main aim is to understand the different personality traits of young consumers and how does it affect their buying behavior. It was found that market maven was significant and positively associated with all three forms of CNFU. Peer group influence was also found to have a positive impact on avoidance of similarity and unpopular choice. The role model was not found to be associated with one’s peer group influence, however, creative choice and unpopular choice counter-conformity were found to be positively associated with one’s role model. The study has implications for Multinational Corporations (especially from cosmetics, fashion, health, and luxury industry) targeting young consumers. Limitations and directions for future research have also been discussed.

[SIG 07 – IM – International Management]

Global Mobility and the Management of Expatriates (edited by Jaime Bonache, Chris Brewster and Fabian Froese) has just recently been published by Cambridge University Press. https://doi.org/10.1017/9781108679220. It aims to promote management and organisational studies (MOS) research into issues relating to leadership, ethical management practices including decision making and sustainability, and organisational development and transition. The Centre seeks to explore these areas within the wider research context of grand challenges, wicked problems and system wide change. The Centre will seek to frame its activities and actions in the light of global, interconnected, system wide problems. We bring together academic colleagues from GB, Ireland and further afield, as well as graduate students, and a diverse group of business and not for profit leaders and policymakers. However, the name of this institute in Japanese dares to connect IP and ‘social problems’. The key is in the ‘and’ that connects the two, suggesting a much more dynamic interaction than the mere placing of two things together. In other words, IP has the potential to solve social problems. There are many other areas in the ‘forest’ of IP. For example, games, e-sports, so-called ‘characters’, and so on. It is the mission of SSP-IP to venture deep into this forest and retrieve valuable information that will help solve a wide range of social problems. https://ssp-ip.iro.aoyama.ac.jp/en/

Scholarship and Doctoral Theses

[SIG 02 – COGO – Corporate Governance]

On January, 18, 2021 the PhD thesis entitled «Managerial Compensation, Overconfidence and Payout Policy» has been defended by Artem Anilov in National Research University «Higher School of Economics» (Moscow, Russia). He presented a piece of his research at EURAM 2019 in Corporate governance SIG. He shows that higher levels of inside debt lead to higher probability and level of repurchases and incentivise a CEO to use repurchases as a main channel of payout. Different components of inside debt provide different incentives in terms of payout decisions. Moreover, overconfident CEOs tend to use repurchases as a main channel of payout. Finally, the author has shown that corporate governance of higher quality is able to reduce the impact of CEO’s overconfidence on payout decisions. Entry barriers and start-up costs are low, no possession of particular assets is required, and they are combinable with domestic responsibilities. Yet, so far efforts to combat hunger and malnutrition in Africa have largely overlooked the potential of the improvement of local food processing and the optimization of the concerned value chains. The interdisciplinary project FermFood funded by Wageningen University and Research (Netherlands) supports the upscaling of production and the development of local value chains of traditional culturally embedded foods to foster women entrepreneurship.
